How to Replace a NOx Sensor in a Freightliner Truck

Use technical content to support OE cross-reference, diagnostics awareness, and buyer confidence before the RFQ stage.

Replacing a NOx sensor in a Freightliner truck requires the correct tools and careful handling. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended procedure. The steps below provide a general replacement overview.

1. Preparation: Ensure you have the correct replacement NOx sensor for your Freightliner truck. Gather the necessary tools and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, safety glasses, and a face mask.

2. Locate the NOx Sensor: The NOx sensor is typically located in front of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler on your Freightliner truck. Check the owner’s manual or service manual to help you locate it.

3. Disconnect the electrical connectors: To ensure the safety of the replacement process, disconnect the sensor’s electrical connectors. Gently slide the lock retainer clip down and remove the connectors. Avoid pulling or twisting the connectors as this might damage them.

4. Remove the NOx sensor: Use a wrench to loosen the NOx sensor. You should be careful not to twist or damage the sensor. Use a lubricant such as PB Blaster to loosen the sensor if it’s stuck.

5. Install the new NOx sensor: Install the new NOx sensor by following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Secure the new sensor in place and tighten it with a torque wrench following the recommended torque specification.

6. Reconnect the electrical connectors: Reconnect the electrical connectors to the new NOx sensor by securing the lock retainer clip.

7. Test the NOx sensor: To ensure that the NOx sensor was properly replaced, test it by starting the Freightliner truck, and check the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) codes with a scan tool.

This process of replacing the NOx sensor in your Freightliner truck may vary based on the model and year of the vehicle. If you’re not comfortable performing the replacement yourself, it’s essential to seek professional help.
