CAT NOx sensors measure nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust of Caterpillar diesel engines and report it to the ECU. How it works on a Caterpillar engine
The sensor sits in the exhaust stream ahead of or after the SCR catalyst, depending on the application. It reads NOx in real time and passes the value to the ECU, which adjusts the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) injection. The loop only works if the sensor reads true: a slow or off-calibration unit makes the ECU dose the wrong amount, and you end up with a fault code and a power derate.
